Nestled in the heart of South Wairarapa, the Martinborough Brewery stands as a testament to the art of craft brewing in a region renowned for its exquisite wines. The core philosophy of Martinborough Brewery revolves around three main tenets: quality in every drop, fostering a sense of community, and an unwavering passion for the craft.

The Maestro Behind the Brews: Eugene

In the world of craft brewing, Eugene is a figure of profound dedication and unparalleled expertise. His background, intriguingly rooted in Biomedical Science, provided him with an environment where meticulous precision and a rigorous methodology took precedence. This foundation in the sciences instilled in him a systematic approach to brewing, while also igniting the spark of creativity that would define his brews.

During a transformative period in Canada, Eugene immersed himself in its burgeoning craft beer culture. Here, he refined his brewing techniques, drawing from global practices while retaining his unique style.

When he returned to New Zealand, he brought with him not only an arsenal of skills but a rejuvenated passion that would invigorate the local craft beer community. Martinborough Brewery benefits immensely from Eugene’s talent; every beer served is a representation of his artistry, promising drinkers a harmonious blend of expertise and soul.

Morning Rush and Preparation

The day begins early in a Christchurch café, often before the sun has fully risen. The dedicated café staff have already been hard at work for hours, ensuring that everything is set for the impending morning rush. Here’s a detailed look at how a typical day unfolds:

  • Espresso Machine Warm-Up: The espresso machine, the heart of the café, is turned on and allowed to warm up. This ensures that the water reaches the ideal temperature for extracting the best flavors from the coffee grounds.
  • Preparation of Condiments: While the machines are warming up, the staff meticulously prepare all the condiments and additional ingredients that will be used throughout the day – from flavored syrups to frothed milk.

The Morning Rush

As the clock approaches the rush hour, the café springs to life:

  • Brewing Espresso: Baristas expertly craft espresso shots, the foundation of most coffee drinks, with precision and speed. The robust aroma fills the space.

“For me, Little Penang represents incredible family spirit and self-determination. Tee Fee and her family have created a restaurant that is truly moving. It’s a beautiful and lovely place to dine and I can’t wait for my next visit!”

In a city that already has a strong representation of Malaysian restaurants, Tee Chiew Fee and her husband Keith decided to take a different approach to Malaysian cuisine in Wellington when they opened their first restaurant on Dixon Street. Tee and Keith decided to focus on Peranakan or Nyonya cuisines, which have Chinese, Indian and ethnic Malay influences but use spices and ingredients native to the area.

The couple was determined to create authentic flavors without being labeled or overwhelmed. However, when they found they couldn’t find certain ingredients in New Zealand, like dried anchovies and ginger flowers, Tee and Keith decided to import them from Malaysia.
